SEDGWICK, Mary Josephine
Mary Josephine Sedgwick was born at Portished, Somerset on 10 December 1868 and baptised at Bristol on 21 December 1868, eldest of the five daughters of William Henry Sedgwick (1834-24 January 1908), a naval engineer, and his wife Mary Lucy née Cookson (1841-29 May 1920), who married at Portsea Island, Hampshire in 1864. By 1879 they had moved to Ipswich and in 1891, Mary was a 22 year old art student, living at 191 Spring Road, Ipswich with her parents, 60 year old William, a retired Royal Naval engineer, and 45[sic] year old Mary Lucy, with twin siblings Mary Flora Anne and Susannah E. 12, both born in Ipswich and in 1901 a 30[sic] year old artist still at Spring Road with her parents. In 1911, a 42-year-old art mistress, still at Spring Road with her widowed mother and sister Martha Flora, an insurance clerk. In 1920 she registered as a teacher at Ipswich Teachers' Registration Council Registers 1914-1948 having worked as a teacher since 1907. A landscape and flower painter, miniaturist and sculptor and a member of Ipswich Art Club 1919-1946, exhibiting 13 works including from 191 Spring Road, Ipswich in 1936 'Autumn Sunshine', 'Gladioli' and a bas-relief figure 'Italian Girl', in 1937 'Italian Boy', 'Apples and Plums', 'A Study of a Dog' and a bas relief 'Music' with her last exhibits in 1942 'Anstey's Cove, Torquay, Devon' and a sculpture 'The Girl with Curls'. In 1939, an 'artist painter, musician', living at 191 Spring Road, Ipswich where Mary Josephine Sedgwick died on 13 December 1946, aged 75, she was unmarried.
