SHALDERS, Emily
Emily Shalders was born at Saxmundham, Suffolk on 24 February 1861, third of the four daughters of Alfred Shalders (1827-9 January 1908) of Southampton, but was born at Worstead, Norfolk, who later kept a draper's shop, Old Waterloo House, on the Cornhill, Ipswich, and his wife Emily Taylor (1825-1902), youngest daughter of James Shepherd Taylor of Fishley Hall, Norfolk, who married at the Baptist Chapel, Worstead, Norfolk on 13 November 1856. She was educated at Ipswich High School for Girls and at the Ipswich School of Science & Art and in 1880 matriculated at the London University. In 1881, Emily was a 20-year-old art student and drawing teacher, living at 16 Burlington Road, Ipswich with her 54-year-old father Alfred, now a draper trade valuer, his 55-year-old wife Emily and two sibling sisters, 22-year-old Clara Shalders, a drawing teacher and 17-year-old Lucy Mary Shalders, a scholar. Emily exhibited at the Ipswich Fine Art Club from 16 Burlington Road, Ipswich in 1881, ‘Flowers from Nature’, 'Bull's Head' and 'Study of a Bird' and in 1882 'A Portrait', 'St Stephens Church, Ipswich' and 'Camellias'. Noted as Millie Shalders, she married at St Matthew's Church, Ipswich on 5 June 1886, George King Smith (1856-1923) and in 1891, the 30-year-old wife of 34-year-old George King Smith (1856-17 November 1923), a commercial traveller, living at Willoughby Road, Ipswich with their two children Kenneth 4 and newly born Phyllis. By 1901 they had moved to 41 Fonnereau Road, Ipswich then moved down the road to No. 39. Her husband George died at 47 Henley Road, Ipswich in 1923, leaving then the substantial sum of £5,000 to his wife and in 1939, Emily was still living at 47 Henley Road, Ipswich. Emily Smith was of 47 Henley Road, Ipswich when she died at Highwood, Constitution Hill, Ipswich on 2 August 1946, aged 85.
