NASH, Joseph

1835 - 1922

Joseph Nash was born at North Brixton Villa, Middlesex in 1835 and baptised at St Matthew's Church, Brixton on 10 June 1835, only son of the two children of artist Joseph Nash (17 December 1809–19 December 1878) and his wife Rebecca Dorothy Elwin, daughter of Fountain Elwin, Esq., of Dulwich, Surrey, who married at Camberwell Church on 10 February 1831. Young Joseph studied under his father and was of Guernsey, Channel Island when he married at St Paul's Church, Long Ditton, Surrey on 13 July 1871, Laura Ellen Thomas (1851-11 May 1936), eldest daughter of the late George Housman Thomas of Uplands, Surbiton. In 1881, Joseph was a 46-year-old artist living at 36 The Avenue, Acton, with his 30-year-old wife and five children, Hasting Joseph Elwin 9, born in Guernsey, Whitewell Tryon 6, Laura Marshman 4, Fountain Okey Colborne 3, all born at Hammersmith and newly born Foster Henry, born at Acton and they retained three indoor servants and they were still living at Acton in 1901 but they then moved to Somerleyton in Suffolk. An artist of marine and coastal subjects in watercolour and exhibited at the Royal Academy and in 1886 was elected a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours. On 24 April 1921 he was living at The White House, Somerleyton, Suffolk with his 70-year-old wife Laura Ellen. Joseph Nash died at Somerleyton on 24 May 1922.
