WEBB, Arthur Geoffrey Gascoyne

1896 - 1981

Arthur Geoffrey Gascoyne Webb was born at Cranbrook House, Newington, Milton, Kent on 17 August 1896, son of Arthur Sapte Webb (1867-12 June 1931), a land agent, and his wife Edith Eliza née Gascoyne (1866-26 May 1945), third daughter of William Whitehead Gascoyne, who married at Bapchild, near Sittingbourne, Kent on 5 November 1895. In 1901, 4-year-old Arthur was living at Cranbrook House, Newington with his parents 34-year-old Arthur, who was born at Kensington and 34-year-old Edith, who was born at Milton and they retained four indoor servants. Young Arthur was educated at Wellington College and in 1914 entered the Royal Navy, a midshipman in 1915 serving at the battle of Jutland and retired as a Lieut. Commander in 1927. He served under the Colonial Office in Nigeria, becoming an expert on Hausa language and customs, returning to England in 1933. He taught cricket at several schools and played for and was secretary of the Leicestershire County Cricket Club. He also served in the Navy in World War II and held senior posts in the King George’s Fund for Sailors. A self-taught artist in pastel of landscapes and seascapes around East Anglia who lived at Woodbridge in Suffolk where he also exhibited. Arthur married twice, firstly at Holy Trinity Church, Brompton on 7 August 1923, Audrey Haggard, youngest daughter of the late Lieut. John George Haggard, R.N., when Audrey was given away by her uncle Henry Rider Haggard, and, after her death from malarial fever whilst returning from Nigeria aboard the 'Accra' on 2 February 1933 and was buried at sea, secondly at Grantham Parish Church, on 5 September 1935, Iris Ethel Thompson elder daughter of Barry C. Thompson of Grantham. Arthur Geoffrey Gascoyne Webb died at Oakham on 6 April 1981.
