MANCHESTER SCHOOL OF ART
Manchester School of Art was founded in 1838 as a School of Design in the premises of Manchester Royal Institution on Mosley Street, Manchester and was renamed Manchester School of Art in 1853. In 1880 they moved to a new purpose-designed building in Cavendish Street and was re-named the Municipal School of Art. A Basic Design Course was introduced into the curriculum in 1940 and today the subjects taught range from Architecture to Film Studies, although Fine Art remains a fundamental part of the syllabus. The school became part of Manchester Polytechnic in 1970 and is now part of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the Manchester Metropolitan University. In 2013 they refurbished the Chatham Tower opened the new Benzie Building. Manchester Metropolitan became a Polytechnic in 1970 and a university in 1992.
