MANCHESTER CITY ART GALLERY
The Royal Manchester Institution for the Promotion of Literature, Science and the Arts, designed by Sir Charles Barry in 1824, became Manchester Art Gallery in 1882 when the building and its collections were handed over to the city. The gallery holds an important historic and modern collection, particularly strong in early 20th-century British art acquired through a bequest from Charles Rutherston (1866-1927), an early patron of sculptor Henry Moore, Charles was the brother of painter Albert Rutherston and William Rothenstein. The collection includes works by L.S. Lowry, Liam Spencer and Adolphe Valette, alongside works by Wyndham Lewis, with the contemporary collection holding works by Richard Deacon, Mona Hatoum, Michael Craig-Martin, Cornelia Parker and Antony Gormley.
