CHELSEA ARTS CLUB
In the early autumn of 1890, a group of artists began to meet in sculptor Stirling Lee’s studio in Manresa Road to discuss forming an exhibiting society. Many of them had studied in Paris, and they were perhaps inspired by the independent exhibitions which the Impressionists had held there. The formal launch of the Club facilities took place at 181 King’s Road on 18 March 1891, with 55 Members present. The Club occupied premises in a studio at 181 King’s Road but in 1901 the Members purchased a house just round the corner, at 143-145 Old Church Street, Southwest Londonand has been there ever since. Chelsea Arts Club is a private members' club for artists and under the constitution, two thirds of the Members must be practising artists – painters, sculptors, designers, photographers, architects many of the other third also work in the arts, film makers, poets, writers, dancers, actors, and musicians. Exhibitions of Members’ work is held throughout the year, and each winter they run an arts events season, with talks and screenings, and performances showcasing the best young talent as well as household names.
