THOMAS, Edward Charles
Edward Charles Thomas was born at Bury St Edmund's, Suffolk on 27 November 1811 and baptised at St James's church, Bury St Edmund's on 26 October 1813, one of the eight children of Walter John Thomas (1786-5 May 1835), drawing master, and his wife Ann Glanville née Smith (1789-1865), who married at St Botolph Bishopsgate, London on 27 December 1810. Edward was taught art by his father and became drawing master at King Edward VI School at Bury St Edmund's. Edward exhibited at the Bury St Edmund's Fine Art Society in 1880 'Between Yarmouth and Acle' and 'Near Reedham', three pictures in 1881, including 'Sunset of Breydon Water' and two pictures in 1882 'Brading Broads' and 'Off Portsmouth' and was also a member of the Ipswich Fine Art Club 1884-1885, exhibiting from the Manor House, Honey Hill, Bury St Edmund’s in 1883, 'On the West Lyn, Lynmouth, North Devon' and two works in 1885, 'Stepping Stones, near the Miner's Ladder, Bettws-y-Coed' and 'The Blumlisalp, from the Churchyard at Thun'. In 1891, a bachelor and an artist drawing master, still living at 5 Honey Hill, Bury St. Edmund's with five unmarried sisters, Elizabeth 78, Hester 68, Antoinette 66, Adele 61 and Nora 57. He was a drawing master when he died at The Manor House, Honey Hill, Bury St Edmund's on 20 December 1899, aged 88, he was unmarried. A pencil drawing of Thomas was made by Fred Roe.
