THOMAS, Glynn

Glynn David Laurie Thomas was born at Cambridge on 7 April 1946, son of John David Thomas (30 May 1918-19 August 1978), a carpenter's improver, and his wife Elsie Mary née Stretch (30 January 1919-March 2000), who married at Cambridge in 1940. Glynn studied at Cambridge College of Art 1962-1967 specialising in illustration and printmaking. He married at Cambridge in 1966, Pearl P. A. King (born 1945). Glynn taught printmaking at Ipswich School of Art 1967-1979 then became a full-time professional artist and exhibited at the Ipswich Art Club, from Lodge Cottage, Blue Gate Lane, Capel St Mary, Ipswich in 1978, two paintings 'Woodbridge Quay' and 'Orwell View, Levington'. A Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers and at the Society's 1983 annual exhibition his etching 'Honfleur', was awarded the Davys' prize for the best print. Glynn has had solo exhibitions at the Dominion Centre, Toronto; the John Russell Gallery, Ipswich; Printworks and Minories, Colchester; the New Ashgate Gallery Farnham; the Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester; the Lyric Hammersmith and the Barbican Centre London, with many mixed exhibitions including two etchings at the Royal Academy also showing at other venues throughout the UK. His works are held by the Ashmolean; the Museum of London and Ipswich Museum collection. He has also illustrated several books.
