TODD, George

1820 - 1904

Baptised at East Harling, Norfolk on 5 March 1820, son of John Todd and his wife Maria née Pratt. He married at St James's church, Bury St Edmundís in 1845, Sophia née Adams and owned a substantial decorating business at Bury St Edmundís, specialising in ceilings and murals, most of his work was executed in West Suffolk, he did however decorate the Chantry at Ipswich. An artist in oils and in 1851 a grainer living at 87 St Johns Street, Bury St Edmunds with his 32 year old wife Sophia and four of his eight children, Emily S. 5, Henry George [q.v.] 4, William S. 2 and Maria F. 1, all born at Bury St Edmunds. By 1861 he had moved his business to 68 St Andrews's Street, Bury St Edmunds where he remained until his death. He was later described as 'painter & decorator', 'painter or house painter'. His wife died at Bury St Edmund's in 1893, aged 73 and he followed in 1904, aged 84 and both were buried in St James's churchyard.
