WALLER, Canon Arthur Pretyman

1872 - 1964

Born at Waldringfield, Suffolk on 7 February 1872, being registered as ‘male’, son of Revd Thomas Henry Waller, rector of the family living of Waldringfield with Hemley, and his wife Jane née Pretyman, who married in 1856. Educated at King Edward VI School, Bury St Edmund's and Clare College, Cambridge taking holy orders; and studied art at Bridgwater School of Art, Somerset and, as was well as being the local rector, was also a prolific landscape painter. He married at Bridgwater, Somerset in 1903, Constance Julia Trevor (3 June 1873-1954) and had two sons and two daughters. He went as curate to his father at Waldringfield then taking over from him as rector 1900-1948. In 1911, a 39 year old clergyman living at The Rectory, Waldringfield with his 37 year old wife Constance, born Northampton and children Trevor 6, born Hemley, Suffolk, Arthur Henry Naunton 4 [q.v.], Mary Constance 3 and Ruth Elizabeth Jane 2, all born at Waldringfield. A member of the Ipswich Art Club 1924-1963 and exhibited from Waldringfield Rectory in 1927 six watercolours 'Showery Weather', 'Nearing the Flood', 'Autumn Mist', 'Plum House, Ramsholt', 'Felixstowe Ferry' and 'Bawdsey', in 1941 three works 'The Peaceful Deben', 'By the Riverside' and 'Hollesley Marshes', in 1943 'Scotch Pines', 'Peace', 'Dawn' and 'A Cotswold Farm', in 1944 'The Evening Tide', 'Break of Day' and 'Nearing the Flood' and was a regular annual exhibitor. He was also a member and exhibiter at the Norfolk & Norwich Art Circle 1947-1953 from Waldringfield, and at the Society of Pastel Painters at the Abbey Gallery in 1929 from Waldringfield Rectory. He died at Mill Cottage, Waldringfield, Suffolk on 24 April 1964, aged 91.
