DENNY, Alexander

1841 - 1925

Alexander Denny, was born at Berners Street, Ipswich in 1841, third child of Samuel Denny and his wife Eliza née Bright, who married at Saxmundham, Suffolk on 26 December 1829, wife Eliza was sister to Henry Bright [q.v.]. His father died at Ipswich in 1847, and in 1851, Alexander was a 9 year old, still living at Berners Street, with his 49 year old mother, a widow, born at Saxmundham and and his three siblings, Eliza Bright 11, born Sweffling, Suffolk, Augustus William 11 and Henry 8, both born at Ipswich. In 1861, a linen draper’s apprentice working in a store in Leicester Square, London. He married at Ipswich in 1867, Emma Hicklenton and in 1871 a 29 year old wholesale draper, living at London Street, Norwich with his 29 year old wife Emma, the home of his father-in-law, 74 year old William Hicklenton, a solicitor. By 1881, all three had moved to 7 Claremont Terrace, Grove Street, Heigham, Norwich, when Alexander was a woollen draper, with an addition of a 9 year old daughter, Edith Emma. In 1891, a wholesale clothier, living at 31 Clarendon Road, Norwich with his wife and daughter and by 1901, had retired and living at the same address. A member of the Ipswich Art Club 1900-1903 and exhibited a total of 22 works, working in pastel his titles included ‘Early Morning’, ‘Sunrise’, ‘Golden Evening’ and ‘Moonlight’. Alexander was also a member of the Woodpecker Art Club, later the Norfolk & Norwich Art Circle, in 1901 from Norwich. His wife died in 1909, aged 76 and Alexander was still at Clarendon Road, Norwich in 1911, with his only daughter Edith Emma. He died at 31 Clarendon Road, Norwich on 9 April 1925 aged 83.
