GREATREX, Albert Edward

1866 - 1956

Born at Salford, Manchester on 4 August 1866, second child of Alfred Greatrex, a book keeper and inspector, and his wife Elizabeth née Bowker, who married at Barton-upon-Irwell, Lancashire in 1861. In 1871, a 9 year old living with his parents, 35 year old Alfred and 29 year old Elizabeth, with five siblings aged 9-0, the family were boarding at 27 Gardner Street, Pendleton, Salford, the home of 39 year old John Bowker, registrar of Birth for Pendleton. In 1881, a 17 year old telegraph boy living with the family 10 Annis Street, Moston, Prestwich and in 1901 Albert was 'traveller in jams' living with his parents at 1 Holmwood Grove, Jesmond, Newcastle-upon-Tyne with his 23 yea sister Annie. Painter in oil and a member of Ipswich Fine Art Club 1925-1945 who exhibited seven works 1931-1938 from The Vicarage Studio, Bures, Sudbury, Suffolk. Most of the exhibits were portraits in oil including in 1932 'Segni d'Espressione' and 'Study of an Anglo-Catholic Priest' and in 1935 a watercolour 'Peter'. He married at Hayfield, Derbyshire in 1927 Hilda Winifred W. Biggs (18 May 1872-1963) and in 1939 a pictorial artist living at Bures House, Bures, Suffolk with his wife Hilda, a fiction writer. He died at Bures in 1956, aged 90. He has been variously known at Alfred and Greatorex.
