JOHNSON, John
John Johnson was baptised at Pettistree, Suffolk on 24 December 1742, eldest son of John Johnson (1722-1780), a surveyor, and his wife Mary Nichols (c.1714-1800), daughter of Samuel and Mary Nichols of Sutton, a brother to both Isaac Johnson and William Johnson and was trained by his father at Alderton, Suffolk. John married at Woodbridge, Suffolk on 10 October 1769, Mary Marken. The 'Ipswich Journal' of 28 October 1780 records: - ‘Last week died at Saxmundham Mr John Johnson. Schoolmaster. He was much respected as an honest man and admired for his integrity in designing and drawing with pen and ink, in imitation of copper plate.’ At a sale of the effects of Thomas Hunt of Harleston, Norfolk, bookseller, held at the [Mag]Pye [Inn] on 29 November 1781 was lot No. 121 which consisted of ‘near a hundred fine drawings in pen and ink, copies and designs by J. Johnson, schoolmaster, late of Saxmundham, deceased.
