DOUGHTY, George Frederic Chester

1908 - 1940

George Frederick Chester Doughty was born at Poringland Rectory, Norfolk on 7 September 1908, only son of Revd Frederic Ernest Doughty (3 May 1867-1947) and his wife Blanche née Tyler (11 February 1881-1970), who married at Bradfield, Berkshire in 1904. He spent a short time in the Merchant Navy, but in 1921 failed his fitness and was discharged. In 1932, George exhibited at Ipswich Art Club from Martlesham Rectory, Suffolk, where his father was rector of the family living, two water-colours 'Barge 'May' of Rochester' and 'Schooner 'My Lady' off Longships', and the following year had a further two watercolours on show 'Smack 'Ivanhoe' at Lowestoft' and 'Barge May of Colchester', in 1935 'The Emma, of Weymouth' and 'My Lady, of Plymouth' in 1937 'Lowestoft Smacks' and 'Spritties' but George only became a member of the club in 1939. In 1939, a disabled merchant seaman, living at The Rectory, Church Road, Martlesham with his parents and where he died in 1940, aged 31.
