BITTEN, Joseph William

1893 - 1986

Joseph William Bitten, was born at Sudbury, Suffolk on 25 February 1893 and baptised at Sudbury on 11 November 1894, son of Frederick William Bitten and his wife Jessie née Brown, who married at Sudbury in 1888 and they went to live at Mile End, London where Frederick was a railway porter. Joseph's 31 year old father Frederick died in August 1896 and his mother Jessie married again at Sudbury in 1898, Isaac Goody, a matmaker. In 1911, an 18 year old silk weaver, living at 67-68 Church Street, Sudbury with his 42 year old mother Jessie and 43 year old step-father Isaac, with his 15 year old brother Benson 15, and step-siblings, Albert 11, Kate 8, Alfred 7 and Donald 2. He married at Sudbury in 1917, Annie A. Mitchell. A painter in oils, he exhibited at Gainsborough House and Sudbury Library and in 1980 exhibited at Christchurch Mansion, Ipswich an oil 'Suffolk Horse Ploughing'. He died at Colchester, Essex in 1986.
