ALLEN, Marion Stella

1912 - 1980

Born Marion Stella Swannell at Ampthill, Bedordshire 12 December 1912, daughter of Walter Swannell, a baker, and his wife Annie Lizzie née Keep, who married at Bedford in 1909. Marion married at Bedford in 1936, Norman Stanley G. Allen (1910-1975) and after the Secon World War they came to Ipswich and lived at 32 Corder Road. Marion studied life and plant drawing at the Ipswich School of Art and trained as an illustrator at studios in London. She commenced painting in oils but under the instruction of Cor Visser [q.v.] becoming more interested in watercolours. A founder member of the Orwell Art Club in 1947 and a member of the Ipswich Art Club from 1949 where she exhibited in 1974 a watercolour 'Flowers from the Hedgerow' and from 664 Norwich Road, Ipswich in 1977 'Framsden Mill'. She died at Ipawich in 1980.
