GARRETT, Dorothy Mabel E

1908 - 2000

As Dorothy Herring, she was born at Ipswich on 2 November 1908, eldest daughter of Henry Herring, general labourer, and his wife Minnie née Parmenter, who married at Ipswich in 1895. In 1911, the family were living at 96 New Cut West, Ipswich with five children, four boys and Dorothy. A student at the Ipswich School of Art under George Rushton [q.v.]. She married at Ipswich in 1932, Redvers Horatio Garrett (25 September 1905-1972), a local government officer, and as Dorothy Garrett worked for a number of years as Art Therapist at Ipswich Group Hospital. In 1939, living at 42 Rosehill Road, Ipswich with her husband. A member and exhibitor at the Ipswich Art Club from 20 Belstead Avenue, Ipswich from 1949 and a member of the Norfolk & Norwich Art Circle from 1952-1986 from Ipswich. Her watercolour 'Sunshine and Showers' was shown at the Ipswich Art Club 1974 centenary exhibition and her paintings were shown in London and Paris and she held a number of exhibitions in Ipswich and Bury St Edmund's, particularly her flower pieces. She died at Brandon, Suffolk in 2000.
