MOSS, Sidney Dennant

Born at Ipswich on 10 June 1885, son of Robert John Moss, a draper's accountant, and his wife Alice Maud née Dennant, who married at Ipswich in 1882. In 1911, a 25 year old lithographic designer boarding at Porth Enys Villa, Mousehole, Cornwall and served om the First World War as a private in the Royal Army Medical Corps and demobilised from the 95th Labour Corps in 1919, after serving in France and Salonika. In 1932 he sailed for Port Said, Egypt and on his return from the Middle East he married in London in 1933 Joan Hildeburgh Glynn (4 January 1899-1979). A landscape and figure painter and a member of Ipswich Art Club 1913-1930 & 1935-1941 exhibiting from The Studio, 32 Prospect Road, Tunbridge Wells, Kent in 1923 three works 'Moonrise, Ashdown Forest', 'Walberswick' and Moonlight' and in 1927 three works 'Autumn in Downland' and two watercolours 'Cloud Castles' and 'And the Sun was Darkened' and in 1935 from the same address two watercolours 'Half a Gale, Newhaven' and 'Rolling Downs'. He had resigned his membership of Ipswich Art Club in August 1930 but was re-elected at Ipswich in 1935 and also exhibited at Tibbenham's Gallery, Brook Street, Ipswich in 1943 'London River'. Elected an associate of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1926 and a full member in 1935 and was a member of Brighton Art Club. From about 1920 Moss lived at Tunbridge Wells later at Pevensey, Sussex before moving to London where he exhibited at all the major galleries including the Royal Academy, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colour, the Beaux Arts Gallery, the Fine Art Society and Paris Salon also exhibiting at several galleries in the provinces. In 1939 a landscape artist living at 'Fourwinds', Hankham Street, Hailsham, Sussex with his wife Joan and he died at Lewes, Sussex on 22 December 1946 and Brighton Art Gallery gave him a memorial exhibition in 1947. His oil 'In Constable Country' was loaned by Ipswich Museum for exhibition at the Ipswich Art Club centenary in 1974.
