PICKTHALL, Caroline Louisa
Caroline Louisa Pickthall was born at Shudy Camps, Cambridgeshire on 11 February 1855, eldest child of Revd Charles Grayson Pickthall (June 1822-24 October 1881), curate at Shudy Camps who, in December 1856, was instituted to the rectory of Chillesford, Suffolk, and his first wife Ellen Louisa née Christie (1828-December 1870), only daughter of Peter Christie of Hoddeston, who married at Great Amwell, Ware, Hertfordshire on 27 April 1854. His second wife was Mary Hale née O'Brien (4 July 1836-14 October 1904), widow of William Palmer Hale, barrister-at-law and younger daughter of the late Rear-Admiral Donat Henchy O'Brien, RN (1785-1857), who married at All Saint's, Norfolk Square, Norwich on 21 April 1874. In 1881, Caroline was a 25-year-old, living at The Rectory, Chillesford with her father, 58-year-old Charles and step-mother 44-year-old Mary, and siblings Constance Sophia 24, born Cambridgeshire, Dorothea Mary 23, Ethel 22, Josephine Margaret 19, Adelaide Elizabeth 17 and Grace Pickthall 11, all born at Chillesford with step-siblings Marmaduke William 5 and Rudolph George 4, both born in London, Caroline had other siblings who were elsewhere including two brothers, Arthur Christie Pickthall born 18 October 1864 and Neville Hunter born 29 September 1867 both at Chillesford. Shortly after her father's death at Chillesford in 1881, Caroline and her two sisters, Constance and Dorothea, moved to Winchester but by 1901, together with sister Constance, had returned to Suffolk, living at Rose Cottage, Walberswick. Caroline was an author, using her mother's maiden name as 'Carol Christie', of 'Ferryknoll. Walberswick Notes' (1911). A landscape painter in oil and watercolour and a member of the Ipswich Art Club 1910-1912, exhibiting from The Red Cottage, Walberswick, Suffolk in 1909, two watercolours 'Tower of the Jerusalem Church, Bruges' and 'Bluebells, Foxborrow Hall', in 1910 four watercolours 'A Quiet Resting Place, Walberswick Church', 'Daffodils in the Priory Woods, Bentley', 'Autumn, Butley Creek' and 'A Dewey Harvest Field', in 1911 'A Primrose Path', 'The Old Beguinage, Niewport, Belgium', 'The Old Bridge at Mells, near Halesworth' and 'The Quay, Nieurport, Belgium', in 1912 'A Bluebell Wood, near Kessingland' and 'Crab Apple Blossom' and was a regular exhibitor, she also exhibited two Suffolk landscapes at the Winchester Art Society exhibition in 1912. Caroline Louisa Pickthall died at her home 'Rooftree', Walberswick on 27 December 1925, she was unmarried. Her younger sister Constance Sophia (1856-1921) has been reported as also being a watercolour artist, but this is probably an error for the youngest sister Grace.
