PORTER, Isabel Jane

1876 - 1961

Isabel Jane Porter was born at Rushmere, near Ipswich on 22 May 1876 and baptised at Rushmere St Andrew Church on 24 August 1876, daughter of Richard Porter, a solicitor, and his wife Fanny née Rodick (1840-1906), who married at Halstead, Essex on 23 July1862. In 1881, Isabel was a 4-year-old, living at 7 Ipswich Road, Rushmere with her parents, 44-year-old Richard, born Ipswich and 40-year-old Fanny, born Halstead, Essex with six siblings, Richard 17, Frances 13, Ada Mary 9, Bernard 7, Annie 6 and Mabel 3 and they retained four indoor servants. Isabel was educated at Ashbourne House School, Colchester, Essex and in 1901 the family were living at The Lawn, Rushmere, Ipswich where her mother died in 1906 and in 1921 Isabel and her sister Mabel were still living there. A watercolour landscape painter and a member of Ipswich Art Club 1905-1922 and exhibited from Rushmere in 1905 'A Parting Glow, Kesgrave', 'The Tyne, Wylam', 'Sunshine and Heather, Foxhall Heath', 'A View of the Orwell from Pond Hall' and 'A Bend of the Tyne, Wylam', in 1906 'Haunt of the Wild Fowl', 'Rise of the Reapers', 'A Lock on the Gipping' and 'Sunny Orford from the River' and was a regular exhibitor showing some thirty-three works with her last in 1920 'Barmouth from across the Estuary', 'Near Barmouth', 'The River Mawddack, N. Wales' and 'The River at Arthog, N. Wales'. Isabel Jane Porter was of Greenhill, Sidford Road, Sidmouth, Devon, when she died at Beeches Nursing Home, Sidmouth, Devon on 9 January 1961, aged 84, she was unmarried.
