PRENTICE, Lillian May
Lillian May Prentice was born at Stowmarket, Suffolk on 15 February 1874, third child of Manning Prentice (4 May 1846-20 November 1898), chemical manufacturer, and his wife Fanny May née Trigg (1846-8 April 1924), who married at Maldon, Essex on 6 July 1870. In 1881, Lilian was a 7-year-old, living at Ipswich Street, Stowmarket with her parents, 34-year-old Manning and 34-year-old Fanny and siblings John Manning 9, Frances Clementine Dora 8 and Arthur Trigg 4. A painter of landscapes and still life in oil and watercolour and a member of Ipswich Art Club 1896-1897 and as L. May Prentice exhibited from Woodfield, Stowmarket in 1896, two oils 'A Bright Corner' and 'From Horsford Bridge, Nairn' and exhibited fourteen works 1895-1897 including an oil 'Chrysanthemums and Eucalyptus' and landscapes views of Dusseldord and of Holland. She married at the Superintendent Registrar's Office, Covent Garden, London on 20 August 1898, Robert Barnabus Pollitt (1865-1917), then manager at the Prentice Bros. explosive works in Stowmarket and, as Mrs Pollitt a member and exhibitor at the Art Club 1898-1901 exhibiting in 1899 watercolours 'Low Tide, Bosham Creek', 'Evening', 'Mud Flats', 'High Tide' and 'A Study'. In 1906, a 32-year-old, when she sailed on the 'Bulawayo' for Cape Town, South Africa with her 41-year-old husband, now an engineer, and their 7-year-old daughter Janet May Brough Prentice Pollitt (3 September 1899-5 January 1986). Robert Barnabus Pollitt was born in Manchester on 16 June 1865 and died in June 1917, son of artist Robert Pollitt and his wife Mary Brough, and was the brother to twin sister artists, Beatrix (1863-1935) and Lillian Pollitt (1863-1919) who has been conflated with Lillian Prentice/Pollitt. In 1939, Lillian May Pollitt, a widow, was living at 18 Anglesea Road, Ipswich and died at Windsor, Berkshire in 1961, aged 86.
