PRETTY, Maud

1868 - 1933

Maud Pretty was born at Waterloo House, Westgate Street, Ipswich in 1868, and baptised on 8 May 1868, daughter of William Pretty (1 January 1842-12 February 1916), a draper later a corset manufacturer, and his first wife, Margaret Mary Woollard (10 September 1836-September 1871), daughter of William Woollard, an Ipswich innkeeper, who married at The Abbey, Malmesbury, Wiltshire on 28 August 1865. In April 1871, Maud was a 2-year-old, living at Waterloo House, Westgate Street, Ipswich with her parents, 29-year-old William and 34-year-old Margaret, with two sibling brothers, William 4 and newly born Ernest. After the death of her mother, her father remarried at Lambeth in 1874, Annie Maria née Sherington (1849-28 December 1925), and in 1911, Maud was a 42-year-old, living at Goldrood, Belstead Road, Ipswich with her father, stepmother, and stepsiblings Frank and Elsie Mary. Maud studied at the Ipswich School of Science and Art, passing the examinations in conjunction with South Kensington School of Art in 1889 and 1893. A watercolour landscape painter and a member of Ipswich Art Club 1920-1933 and exhibited from Barton Road, Felixstowe, Suffolk in 1923, four watercolours 'Felixstowe Ferry', 'Winchelsea', 'Old Gateway, Winchelsea' and 'Dutch Interior', in 1927 three watercolours 'Bluebells', 'Sunshine from Lausanne' and 'Low Tide, Levington', in 1928 'St Austell Bay', in 1930 'Chelsworth, Suffolk' and 'Polstead, Suffolk', in 1931 five works 'In Butley Woods', 'In a Felixstowe Garden', 'Mawnan Smith, Cornwall', 'Helford River, Cornwall' and 'Maen Porth, Cornwall' and in 1932 five works 'Foxhall Heath', 'Lacock, Wiltshire', Castle Combe', 'Suffolk Heathland' and 'Old Bridge, Scotland' and in 1933 five watercolours 'Foxhall Heath', 'Laycock, Wilts', 'Castle Combe', 'Suffolk Heathland' and 'Country Cottage, Bake Day' and exhibited some thirty-two works including 'St Austell Bay' (1928), 'Chelsworth, Suffolk' and 'Polstead, Suffolk' (1930). Maud Pretty died at Barton House, Barton Road, Felixstowe on 24 November 1933, aged 65, she was unmarried.
