PRETTY, Maud

1868 - 1933

Born at Waterloo House, Westgate Street, Ipswich in 1868, daughter of William Pretty (1842-1916), a draper later a corset manufacturer, and his first wife Margaret Mary née Woollard (1836-1871), who married at Malmesbury, Wiltshire in 1865. In 1871, a 2 year old living at Waterloo House, Westgate Street, Ipswich with her parents, 29 year old William and 34 year old Margaret, with two sibling brothers, William 4 and newly born Ernest. Her father remarried at Lambeth in 1874, Annie Maria née Sherington (1850-1925), and in 1911 a 42 year old living at Goldrood, Belstead Road, Ipswich with her father, stepmother and siblings Elsie Mary 25 [q.v] and Frank 31 [q.v.]. A watercolour landscape painter and a member of Ipswich Art Club 1920-1933 and exhibited from 2 Barton Road, Felixstowe, Suffolk in 1923 four watercolours 'Felixstowe Ferry', 'Winchelsea', 'Old Gateway, Winchelsea' and 'Dutch Interior', in 1927, three watercolours 'Bluebells', 'Sunshine from Lausanne' and 'Low Tide, Levington' and in 1931 five works 'In Butley Woods', 'In a Felixstowe Garden', 'Mawnan Smith, Cornwall', 'Helford River, Cornwall' and 'Maen Porth, Cornwall' and in 1932 five works 'Foxhall Heath', 'Lacock, Wiltshire', Castle Combe', 'Suffolk Heathland' and 'Old Bridge, Scotland' and exhibited some thirty-two works including 'St Austell Bay' (1928), 'Chelsworth, Suffolk' and 'Polstead, Suffolk' (1930). She died at Felixstowe in 1933, aged 65, she was unmarried.
