PRITCHATT, Alfred Joseph
Alfred Joseph Pritchatt was born at Portsmouth, Hampshire on 31 May 1894, son of Alfred Moore Pritchatt (1848-1934), a naval pensioner, and his wife Jessie Bruce née Andrews (5 May 1857-1953), who married at Portsea Island, Hampshire in 1877. In 1901 the family were living at 170 Clive Road, Portsmouth. In 1916, as a dental mechanic, a reserved occupation, was of 20 Walton Road, Woking, Surrey, when young Alfred was conscripted into the Surrey Regiment but opted to join the Royal Horse Guards rather than the Dental Corps and subsequently joined the Guards Machine Gun Corps serving in France and Belgium between May and November 1918. Alfred married at Woking, Surrey in 1923, Ethel Mary Mayhew (7 March 1895-24 August 1984) and in 1926, Alfred was a dentist living at 210 Cauldwell Hall Road, Ipswich. A watercolour landscape painter and a member of Ipswich Art Club 1932-1964, in 1932, as A. J. Pritchett, exhibited from 210 Cauldwell Hall Road, Ipswich four watercolours 'Cool Waters', 'The Wood Cutter's Path', 'River Alde, near Iken' and 'Late Evening', in 1933 as Alfred Pritchatt, two watercolours 'End of Year, Foxhall Heath' and 'Towards Harwich and Shotley', in 1935 two watercolours 'Autumn, Foxhall Heath' and 'On the Somersham Road, Suffolk', in 1936 'Late October Riddlesworth' and 'Evening at Rushmere' but in 1937 one of his three exhibits was an oil 'Late October, Baylham' and watercolours 'After Rain, near Lavenham' and 'Autumn Evening, Mellis', in 1943 he had five works on display 'The Untidy Gipping at Blakenham', 'Sunshine near Coddenham', 'A Likely Spot', 'Riddlesworth, Norfolk' and 'Chelsworth, Suffolk' and in 1944 'At Aldercar, near Ipswich'. Most of his subjects were local views and he was a regular annual exhibitor showing over sixty works. Alfred Joseph Pritchatt died at 119 Valley Road, Ipswich on 24 October 1967, his wife Ethel Mary Pritchatt was an honorary member of the Ipswich Art Club 1948-1958 but not an exhibitor. They were both buried in St Mary's churchyard, Great Bealings, near Ipswich.
