ROLL, Joseph Alexander

1878 - 1959

Born at Lambeth, Surrey on 5 January 1878, eldest son and second child of Robert Thomas Roll, a mill stone dresser, who was born at Gorleston, Suffolk, and his Scottish wife Isabella née Sandilands, who married at Bermondsey in 1875. In 1881, a 3 year old living at 26 Skiers Street, West Ham, Essex with his parents, 38 year old Robert and 34 year old Isabella, with his sibling sister Catherine 4 and by 1891 had moved to 8 Carlton Grove, Camberwell and ten years later down the road at 37 Culmore Road as a 23 year old metal designer and where his father died later that year aged 59. In 1911 a 28 year old manager at timber mills living at Stow Road, Elmswell, Suffolk with his 60 year old widowed mother from which time he deducted at least three years from his age. Watercolour landscape painter and a member of Ipswich Art Club 1913-1915 exhibiting from Buttenhaugh, Elmswell in 1913 two works 'The Railway Bridge, Gorleston' and 'Beach at Evening, Gorleston'. In 1939, giving his date of birth as 5 January 1886, was a commercial artist living at 1 Snipe Cottage Clopton, Woodbridge, Suffolk. He does not seem to have married and died at Clopton, Suffolk in 1959, aged 78[sic].
