SLATER, Martin Johns

1892 - 1990

Born at Hadleigh, Suffolk on 28 April 1892, son of William Martin Slater, a pharmaceutical chemist at 41 High Street, Hadleigh, and his wife Ellen née Johns who married at Ipswich in 1891. Articled to his architect uncle Edwin Thomas Johns [q.v.] in the practice of Eade & Johns at Ipswich before the Great War. In 1921, on his marriage to Eileen Marjorie Rands (24 September 1895-1946), he became a partner in his uncle's practice at 8 Lower Brook Street, Ipswich when the partnership became Johns & Slater until his uncle retired in 1933. A watercolour painter and a member of Ipswich Art Club from 1921 and exhibited from 8 Lower Brook Street, Ipswich in 1927 four works 'Ufford', 'Claydon', 'Firle, Sussex' and 'Woodbridge' his other works 1924-1945 included 'Southwold Harbour' (1933) and from Firbank, Dalton Road, Ipswich 'Fishing Boats' (1945). In 1939 an architect & surveyor living at 25 Dalton Road, Ipswich with his wife Eileen and he died at Ipswich in 1990.
