TAYLOR, Emma
As Emma Smyth[e], she was born at Berners Street, Ipswich and baptised at St Nicholas Street Church, Ipswich on 30 May 1819, daughter of James Smyth (1780-1863) and his wife Sarah Harriet née Skitter (1783-1845), who married at Norwich on 14 June 1811; James was an accountant with bankers Bacon, Cobbold, Durningham & Cobbold in Tavern Street, Ipswich who added a final 'e' to his surname. Emma was a sister to Edward Robert Smythe and Thomas Smythe, and she married at St Stephen's Church, Ipswich on 13 September 1853, Robinson Taylor (1806-4 January 1864), who was born at Lincoln and was editor of the 'Ipswich Journal'. In 1861 they, and their two young children, Emma Kate 4 and John Reginald 1, both Ipswich born, were living at 196 Woodbridge Road, Ipswich. Her husband died at Ipswich in 1864 when Emma continued to teach drawing and painting. Emma was a painter in water-colour and exhibited at the Society of Painters in 1865 and in 1871 was still living at 196 Woodbridge Road, Ipswich when described as 'artist water colour painting'. Emma Taylor died at Ipswich on 2 August 1877.
