WINTERTON, Mary Evelyn
Mary Evelyn Winterton was born at 20 Greville Place, St John's Wood, Marylebone, London on 28 October 1890, second of the three children of William Ralph Winterton (1851-12 May 1924), a drug merchant, and his wife Mary Jane née Charles (1853-16 January 1924), who married at Marylebone in 1887. In 1911, young Mary was a 20-year-old art student still living at 20 Greville Place with her parents, 59-year-old William and 57-year-old Mary, with siblings, 22-year-old Margaret and 17-year-old Ralph Norman. Mary was a landscape painter and a member of Ipswich Art Club 1926-1943, and exhibited from White House, Eye, Suffolk in 1927, three works 'An Old Inn, Stourbridge' and 'Interior of St Bartholomew's the Great, West Smithfield' and an etching 'Sidmouth, Devon', in 1935 four works 'A Farm at Walcot, Diss', 'The Old Barn, Bosham, Sussex', 'Across the Quarry Fields, Stourbridge' and a watercolour 'A Bit of Old Wembley, Middlesex and in 1937 six works 'Stonehaven, Aberdeen', 'Gardener's Hall, Braiseworth', 'February Sky over Denmark Green, Eye', 'Roydon Fen in Winter Sunlight', 'Coronation Chair in Edward the Confessor's Chapel, Westminster' and 'Damholme, Goathland, Yorkshire' exhibiting sixteen works 1927-1937. In 1939, Mary was an unmarried principal of a private school, still living at White House, sometimes named Mansion House, Eye, Suffolk, with two other teachers. Mary Evelyn Winterton died at The White House, Eye on 4 April 1966, aged 75, she was unmarried.
