Born at Ecclesall Bierlow, Yorkshire in 1930, son of Joseph Chapman and his wife Sarah née Nathan, who married at Ecclesall Bierlow in 1927. He studied at Goldsmiths' College School of Art 1946-1949, then at the Royal College of Art 1951-1954. He married at Sudbury, Suffolk in 1957, Adella [Della] Lythgoe [Chapman q.v.]. A painter in oil and has an extensive knowledge of the history of art and has lectured part-time at private collections, including that of Gustav Delbanco, and was a partner in Roland, Browse & Delbanco. He works from his home in Hitcham, Suffolk, but also in Cornwall and Dorset and later from his studio at Margaret Catchpole's Cottage, Brandeston, Suffolk.
