CHESTON, Charles Sidney

1882 - 1960

Born at South Kensington, London on 2 April 1882, son of Chester Cheston, a surveyor, and his second wife Amelia née Coppen, who married at Kensington in 1880, his first wife, Emma Claudine née Goodchild, whom he married in 1864, died at Kensington in 1878. In 1891 the family were living at 99 Clapham Common, Hackney and after his education at Malvern College, young Charles attended the Slade School of Fine Art 1899-1902. He married at Ecclesall Bierlow, Yorkshire in 1904, Evelyn Davy (1875-1929), who was also an artist, and on her death at Axminster, Devon in 1929 Charles published a monograph, 'Evelyn Cheston: Member of the New English Art Club 1908-1929' (1930). In 1939 an artist living at The Hill, Postead, Suffolk with a married Eugenie Marie Cheston (28 January 1887-1974). A painter and etcher who exhibited widely including the Royal Academy, Royal Hibernian Academy, Goupil Gallery, Royal Society of Painters in Water-Colour, Fine Art Society and New English Art Club. In 1950 elected president of the Royal Society of Painters in Water Colour. He died at Polstead on 2 October 1960.
