PYNE, Katharine Annie

1871 - 1944

Katharine Annie Pyne, sometimes Catherine Annie or just Annie, was born at East Moseley, Surrey on 12 December 1871 and baptised at East Moseley Church on 23 May 1872, eldest daughter of Thomas Pyne and his first wife Katharine Susan née Salter (1848-1888), who married at St John the Baptist Church, Kentish Town on 18 March 1871. In 1881, young Katharine was a 9-year-old, living at 56 Upper Park Road, Hampstead with her parents, 37-year-old Thomas and 32-year-old Katherine and two sibling sisters Evelina Eleanor Warden 8 and Mary Florence Pyne 7. Her mother died in 1888, aged thirty-nine and in 1891, her father took a second wife, Elizabeth Mary Griffiths, at Lexden, Essex. In 1891 Katharine, her father and new stepmother, and Annie's sibling sisters were still living at Upper Park Road, Hampstead, when the three girls are each noted as 'art student'. In 1901, a 29-year-old 'satin wood painter', living at 82 Huddleston Road, Islington, London with her two sisters Eva 28, a portrait painter and Mary 26, a satin wood painter, their parents are missing from the 1901 census due to their move to Dedham, Essex. A member of Ipswich Art Club 1897-1898, exhibiting from 17 Burghley Road, Highate, London in 1896 seven watercolours, 'A Rural Garden', 'A Wiltshire Lane', 'Twilight', 'The Downs, Wroughton, Wilts', 'Wet Weather, Flatford', 'An Apple Orchard' and 'An Orchard at Wroughton, Wilts' but did not exhibit the following year she also exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1910 from her sister's home. In 1939, Annie was living at the home of her married sister Evalina Warden at Aysgarth, Woodstock Road, Yarnton, Oxfordshire. As Katherine Annie Pyne, she died at her sister's home at Yarnton, Oxfordshire on 11 January 1944, aged 72, she was unmarried. One of her watercolours 'A Farm at Gt Missenden' was sold at Keys of Alylsham, Norfolk in 1994.
