SHORT, Mary Elizabeth

1872 - 1953

Born at 'Hillside', Church Street, Eye, Suffolk on 14 December 1872, daughter of artist William Short [q.v.] and his wife Mary Ann née Bolton (1831-1881). In 1881 a 9 year old living at Church Street, Eye with her parents, 52 year old William and 50 year old Mary Ann. Taught art by her father and a member of Ipswich Art Club 1923 until 1935 from Hillside, Eye, but does not appear to have exhibited until 1945 when she had on show an oil 'Edgar Granville, Esq., M.P.' In 1939 a County Alderman & Justice Of The Peace for Suffolk still living at Hillside, Church Street, Eye. She was Mayor of Eye and died at Eye in 1953, aged 82, she was unmarried. The author of 'Historical Reminisence of Eye' (Eye 1922) and her portrait is in the National Gallery.
