STUBBINGS, Irene Gertrude
As Irene Gertrude Nash, she was born at Lowestoft, Suffolk 12 March 1881, only daughter of Arthur Nash (1852-1932), a fish merchant, and his wife Elizabeth Curtis née Ling (1851-1932), who married at St Saviour's Southwark in 1875. By 1891 the family had moved to The Lodge, The Elms, Ramsgate, Kent from where she studied at Ramsgate School of Art. Irene married at Christ Church, Ramsgate on 17 April 1909, Arthur Edmund Stubbings (3 October 1885-11 July 1940), a manager in a confectionery business and only son of Arthur Stubbings of Ipswich, and they moved to 13 Holly Road, Ipswich where Irene continued her studies at Ipswich School of Art, under George Rushton. A member of Ipswich Art Club 1935-1956 but had exhibited from 1923 'Lady Betty T. Cosy' and a conté drawing 'Happy Childhood from Life', in 1933 she exhibited from 3 Broomhill Road, Ipswich a needlework picture on linen 'Girl's Head', in 1934 a sculpture 'The Artist', in 1935 two watercolours 'Madame Mary Glory' and 'Calvary' and in 1936 she exhibited from 19 Chapel Place, Ramsgate a miniature 'My Mother' and in 1938 from Trafalgar, West Cliff Road, Ramsgate a needlework picture 'Seascape' and a pastel & tapestry 'The Three Maries' but was not a member or exhibitor in 1945. In 1939 she was living at 60 West Cliff Road, Ramsgate with her husband Arthur but on her husband's death in 1940 she returned to Suffolk. Irene Gertrude Stubbings was of 6 Westerfield Road, Ipswich when she died at St Edmund's Nursing Home, 5 Constitution Hill, Ipswich on 20 August 1956, aged 75.
