WEBB-BOWEN, Col. Mostyn Hird Wheeler

1894 - 1983

Born at Haverford West, Pembrokeshire on 26 September 1894, son of Towsend Ince Webb-Bowen (9 August 1860-1946), a bank manager, and his wife Frances Augusta Mary née Williams (9 August 1865-1962), who married at Haverford West in 1892 and in 1939 were living at 'Fainthorne', Titchfield Road, Fareham, Hampshire. In 1911, a 6 year old living at 29 Beachamp Avenue, Leamington, Warwickshire with his parents, 40 year old Townsend Webb-Bowen and 35 year old Frances Augusta, with his 2 year old sister Olive Milicent, born at Leamington. Commissioned into the Royal Marines in 1914 serving in World War One, on Special Service, HMS 'Hyacinth', Flagship of Rear Admiral Herbert Goodenough King-Hall, Commander-in-Chief, Cape of Good Hope, South Africa. Promoted Lieutenant 1915 and Captain Royal Marines Artillery in 1918. He married at Kensington, London in 1929, 19 year old Evelyn Florence Lane [Webb-Bowen q.v.]. He served on HMS 'Iron Duke' and on HMS 'Queen Elizabeth' and as Capt, Royal Marines on HMS 'Hawkins' in Colombo, Ceylon 1931-1933 and at Chatham 1933-1934. Promoted Major in 1934 serving at Deal, Kent 1934-1935. During World War Two promoted acting Lt. Col. 1940; Lt. Col. 1942 and Col. 1945 when he retired. A member and exhibitor at Norfolk & Norwich Art Circle 1967-1972 from Beccles and a member and exhibitor at the Beccles Society of Artists. He died at Beccles on 30 June 1983.
