NORMAN-CROSSE, Winnifred Alice

1871 - 1940

As Winnifred Alice Bray, she was born at Dinapore, Bengal, India on 5 December 1871 and baptised at Dinapore on 2 January 1872, daughter of Maj.Gen. George Frederick Campbell Bray (1826-1884) and his wife Charlotte Frances née Pope (1830-1906), who married at Guildford, Surrey in 1859. Winnifred married at Kensington, London on 11 September 1900, landscape artist George Samuel Norman-Crosse (1871-1912), and painted under the name of Mrs W. Norman-Crosse. In 1901, a 29 year old living at 44 Hartington Road, Stockton-on-Tees, Durham with her 29 year old 'landscape artist' husband George. She was probably taught art by her husband until his death at Norwich in 1912. A member and exhibitor at the Woodpecker Art Club, later the Norfolk & Norwich Art Circle, in 1924 from Framlingham, Suffolk. In 1939, she was living at Brooke House Nursing Home, Henley Road, Ipswich where she died in 1940. Her Christian name is variously spelt Winifred and Wynifred, but she was baptised Winnifred.
