GRAY, John Edmond Henry

1869 - 1951

John Edmond Henry Gray was born at Cosham, Hampshire on 17 April 1869, eldest child of Edmond Robert Henry Gray (19 August 1840-3 May 1912), a Lieutenant in the Militia, and his wife Cecile Maria Astley (1836-1913), daughter of Sir Francis Dugdale Astley, Edmond and Cecile married at St Paul's, Wilton Place, London on 27 May 1868. In 1871, one-year-old John was living at Clifton Place, Folkestone with his parents, 30-year-old Edmond, born at Almondsbury, Gloucester and 35-year-old Cecile, born at Bath, Somerset and they kept two indoor servants. By 1881, 40-year-old Edmond, now with no profession, his 44-year-old wife Cecile and their three children, John 11, Francis Cecil 9 and Kathleen Mary 3, had moved to 8 Petersham Terrace, Kensington, London where they kept six indoor servants. John married at Thursey, Surrey on 24 June 1897, Dulcibella Amy Gooch (1877-29 March 1949), daughter of Revd Francis Harcourt Gooch, vicar of Thursley, and his wife Catherine née Paine, and in 1901, a 31-year-old artist, living at Wynford House, Wynford Eagle, Dorset with his 24-year-old wife Dulcibella, born at Brandeston, Suffolk and their one-year-old son John Astley, born at Wynford Eagle, Dorset and they kept three indoor servants. In 1911, a 41-year-old painter artist, living at Wedhampton, Walmer Beach, Kent with his wife and two more sons Richard and Henry, both born at Wynford Eagle. A landscape and portrait artist who exhibited at the Royal Academy also showing at Royal Birmingham Society of Artists; Manchester City Art Gallery; New Gallery; Royal Society of Portrait Painters, Royal Society of British Artists; Royal Scottish Academy and Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour. A member of the Ipswich Art Club from Benhall 1926-1936 but had exhibited in 1923 an oil, 'Phlox' and exhibited from Benhall in 1930, three still life paintings two titled 'Roses' and one 'Polyanthus'. He was also elected a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours in 1941. His wife died in a Norwich hospital in 1949, aged 72 and John Edmond Henry Gray died at Benhall Cottage, Benhall, Saxmundham, Suffolk on 17 December 1951, aged 82.
