STANLEY, Archer

1826 - 1878

Archer Stanley was born at St George's, Hanover Square, London in 1826, son of Caleb Robert Stanley and his wife Ann née Miles, who married at Marylebone, London on 10 January 1817. In 1841, Archer was a student at a school at Temple Square, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, and in 1851, a 25-year-old landscape painter, living at Maddox Street, St George's, Hanover Square, London with his parents, 55-year-old Caleb, an artist landscape painter, and 60-year-old Ann, with five siblings, Anne 31, Jemima 30, Charles 28, an historical painter, Georgina 22 and Caleb 18, a scholar. Archer exhibited, as did his father and brother Charles Horace Stanley, at the Suffolk Fine Arts Association at Ipswich in 1850, two watercolours 'Hill and Dale - Scene in the Island of Arran' and 'Study of a Normandy Peasant'. In 1861, an unmarried landscape painter, lodging at 39 Somerset Street, Marylebone, the home of Henry Horsley and his family. He married at Logie, Perth, Scotland on 25 August 1863, Frances Griffith Sharpe. Archer Stanley was of 7 Crescent Place, Mornington, Crescent, London 'artist', when he died at Middlesex Hospital, Charles Street, London on 14 December 1878, aged 52.
