WINDER, Edith Lucy

1877 - 1974

Edith Lucy Winder was born at The Street, Brandeston, Suffolk on 4 March 1877, daughter of George Winder (1824-16 August 1905), a farmer, and his wife Charlotte née Pye (1831-8 January 1920), who married at St Pancras, London in 1871. In 1891, Edith was a 14-year-old scholar, living at Spring Road, Ipswich with her parents, 65-year-old George, now a retired farmer, and 59-year-old Charlotte, with siblings Henry George 19, born Woodbridge and Frank 15, born Brandeston, both in Suffolk. Edith studied at the Ipswich School of Art 1898-1903 and in February 1900 won 2nd prize, behind Claude Pyett in the 'Drawing in Outline from the Cast' class. By 1901 the family had moved to 4 Alpe Street, Ipswich and Edith married at Ipswich in 1909, Charles James Chalk (11 January 1881-21 January 1968), a cashier's assistant, and in 1911, Edith was living at Thalia, Lister Road, Ipswich with her 29-year-old husband, who was born at Ipswich. In 1939, Charles James Chalk was a poultry and fruit farmer, living at 9 Ponswood Road, Hastings with his wife Edith. Edith Lucy Chalk died at Tusker House, 57 Pine Avenue, Hastings, Sussex on 24 January 1974.
