WELCH, Alice Mildred

1920 - 2011

As Alice Mildred Child, she was born at Croydon, Surrey on 17 July 1920, daughter of Herbert William Child (26 October 1892-), a painter, and his wife Alice Jane née Mitchell (1890-1925), who married at St Stephen Croydon on 26 December 1913. Alice won an art scholarship at school but spent her working life in nursing. She married at Dartford, Kent in 1944, George Edward Welch (8 March 1920-4 October 2009) and after her marriage they moved to Lowestoft, Suffolk where Alice, a Queen's nursing sister, spent her working life dedicated to nursing in the district. Later in her life, Alice Welch again took up art and attended lessons at Wensum Lodge, Norwich also had lessons from Frank Forward. Alice was a founder member of the Monday Leisure Painters and the Oulton Broad Art Circle which meetings were held at her home in Oulton Broad until the Art Circle moved to Oulton Community Centre and she was also a Member of the Society of Floral Painters, the Lowestoft Art Group and several other art clubs. Alice worked in all mediums but latterly worked on painting on silk, producing many remarkable paintings which she exhibited at the Mall Galleries in London, at Southampton, Jersey and at the Assembly Rooms, Norwich and many other venues in East Anglia. Alice was always willing to pass on her knowledge and skills to others having many demonstrations and she donated pictures to raise money in aid of charities. Alice Mildred Welch died at 23 Beverley Close, Lowestoft, Suffolk on 25 June 2011.
