GREAT YARMOUTH COLLEGE OF ART
Great Yarmouth College of Art and Design was a municipal art college in the Norfolk resort town of Great Yarmouth. The College of Art and Design building was constructed by J. W. Cockrill in 1912 within the area of a former ropewalk by which time had been converted to a public park in Nelson Road. It opened for pupils in 1913 and noted pupil in this index Marjorie May Bacon 1914-1919, Barbara Rosamund Daniels 1932-1933. During the Second World War it was used as the town's Civil Defence Report Centre. It was one of the few colleges to keep plaster casts from Antiquity, the Royal Academy Schools being about the only Art institution not to embrace smashing of the casts in the post-war era. In 1989 Great Yarmouth College of Art merged with the Norwich School of Art to form the Norfolk Institute of Art and Design and in 1991 it was given the name of the Norfolk Institute of Art and Design becoming an Associate College of the new Anglia Polytechnic. The College buildings having been disused for some time and fallen into disrepair, plans were in place in 2008 to restore the building and convert it into several dwellings.
