NEW BURLINGTON GALLERIES

1927 - 1955

The New Burlington Galleries, an art gallery at 5 Burlington Gardens, Mayfair, London is first noticed on 8 August 1927 when Frederick George Plummer, applied for a music and dancing licence for the Gallery and it was opened in December 1927 with an exhibition by the New English Art Club and the new London Portrait Society. There were further exhibitiitions in 1928 and the 26th Exhibition of The London Group was held at the New Burlington Galleries, London 5-26 January 1929 and the first exhibition of the Young Painters' Society was there 17 March-7 April 1930 and [Sir] Roland Algernon Penrose (1900-1984), organised the International Surrealist Exhibition at the New Burlington Galleries in 1936 and in the same year another exhibitor was Gilbert Mahon. Betsy Blake exhibited at the New Burlington Galleries with the London Group of Artists in 1937 and another Suffolk exhibitor was Philip 'Pif' Fortin of the Ipswich School of Art. In 1938, they exhibited Picasso's Guernica together with preparatory paintings and sketches to raise funds for the National Joint Committee for Spanish Relief. There were several exhibitions advertised in the 1940s and 50s and The London Group continued to hold their exhibitions at the New Burlington the last one noted was in November 1954 and in 1955 the 'Daily Express Young Artists' exhibition was held at the New Burlington Galleries. There were no further advertisements in 1956.

Burlington Gallery noted in Fletcher and Helmreich, several galleries did business under the name the 'Burlington Gallery' in London in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
