BELMONTE, Guido
Guido Belmonte was born at 27 Bread Street, Edinburgh on 1 November 1921, son of Gaetano Belmonte (16 September 1876-2 July 1940), a hairdresser, and his wife Francisca née Holle (1882-21 March 1938). Guido studied at Edinburgh College of Art 1937-1942 and after four years military service returned to his studies and in 1947 awarded a Rome Scholarship in Sculpture from the British School in Rome. In 1939 he won the Andrew Grant Scholarship for four years and in 1941 and 1947 the Andrew Grant Vacation Scholarships to London and Paris. By 1953 he was living in Hampstead, London where he married his first wife in 1953, Prudence Seward, who later divorced, and secondly in 1962, Pauline Marie Whattler (born 29 June 1939). A tutor on the foundation course at Hornsey College of Art 1967-1968 and then at Ipswich School of Art until the early 1980s, working alongside Bernard Reynolds in the sculpture department, tutoring amongst others John Chipperfield. Belmonte exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy 1941-1942 and at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions from London addresses. After the retirement of Bernard Reynolds and the death of Belmonte, the sculpture department at Ipswich was carried on by David Campbell Baldry. Guido Belmonte died at Camelford, Cornwall in 1986.
